Despite an assortment of kids and adults sick with a bad cold, I managed to make four pies for pi day: pumpkin chiffon (this has meringue mixed in with the pumpkin mixture to make it fluffier, it's the only pumpkin pie I ever make), cherry (we had frozen cherry pie filling already, so this one was easy), chocolate (it's just pudding in a graham cracker crust), and for the first time, lemon meringue. The lemon meringue turned out pretty good except that the meringue topping shrank and pulled away from the crust, so it ended up like a fluffy island on a yellow lake. Still tasted good!

We've now watched up to episode 36 of Guardian. The ancient past episodes were very fun! I'm a little worried about watching the final few episodes because I know it's not going to end well. I'm in theory still reading Record of the Missing Sect Master but tbh I'm considering dropping it. It's very slow moving and feels like at least half (this is an exaggeration) the content is other characters reacting to the couple-ness of the main couple, which. I guess is a trope that some people like (a lot of people like, judging by some of the fanfic out there) but it is not my thing at all. Also it's doing this thing where it feels like at this point, both the mains are on the same page re. a lot of the hidden information, but the author's still holding it back from the reader just ...because? I think if you want to a dramatic reveal later on some things need to be a mystery to the characters who care about it, too. Anyway. A lot of the mysteries and secret identities and such, which should be right up my alley, feel more artificial here than they have in other books. So I should probably just drop it and read something I'll enjoy, instead.

I did manage to work on some projects, too! I modeled/printed some attachments to help build a sewing frame, as well as an adjustable hole-punching template! I even worked on some actual books too. And I got my assignment for this year's cnovel bookbinding exchange, which. I am going to have so much fun with this.

Happy Saturday!

I'm going to be doing a little maintenance today. It will likely cause a tiny interruption of service (specifically for www.dreamwidth.org) on the order of 2-3 minutes while some settings propagate. If you're on a journal page, that should still work throughout!

If it doesn't work, the rollback plan is pretty quick, I'm just toggling a setting on how traffic gets to the site. I'll update this post if something goes wrong, but don't anticipate any interruption to be longer than 10 minutes even in a rollback situation.

Since there are a decent number of fanbinders here, if you know anyone who is BIPoC and interested in a bookbinding scholarship, please feel free to spread the word. I am reading the announcement as open without restriction to guild members only since winning the scholarship includes getting a membership in the guild. This was the announcement on the book-arts listserv I read:

The scholarship is designed to help expand funding opportunities in the area of Book Arts to support creative projects, education and research.

Individual grants will be awarded in the full sum of $1,000 and a complimentary Guild of Book Workers membership for 1 year. Awarded funds will be payable to individuals with a US tax ID.

Awardees will be required to submit a brief write-up for the Guild of Book Workers Newsletter summarizing the experience and impact of the grant.

This fiscal year’s grant money must be expended by June 30, 2026. Submit your application by April 20, 2026.

Project proposals may include but are not limited to:
  • Taking a class offered through a book arts institution

I slept??? until 11 this morning??? Blame DST, but I also walked more than eight miles yesterday, much of that inside the Art Institute with [archiveofourown.org profile] Shibrogane, who was in town for a conference, hurrah! I am also on newsletter fill-in duty at work; last Monday, I wrote our afternoon newsletter, which I usually edit, and from Friday to this coming Friday, I wake up at ugly o'clock and put together the morning newsletter, which is horrific. It actively makes me ill to not get enough sleep and throw myself right into work as I wake ("wake") up. Like, thank goodness I found some melatonin so maybe I can get enough sleep early enough tonight, but that's a gamble.

GOSH. It has been a month! We've got elections stuff at work (the Illinois primary elections are March 17th and it requires so much prep work), and then Jesse Jackson died and that became our ENTIRE output (not literally, but it's felt like it) for two or three weeks. I am TIRED.

The biggest thing is: condo got! Closing is this coming Friday! I am — scrambling to get packed and organized in addition to All of This Above, because my original shipment of moving boxes was delayed and then stolen. I'm also constantly laughing at myself because I was like, oh yeah, I'll have two weeks for contractors to fix stuff and for painting and gradual move-in and they can obviously just let themselves in to get things done! And then I remembered, with horror, that no, I am the one who will have to constantly ferry back and forth between the apartments in order to let them in etc etc etc. It's awkward on public transit and too long for a morning walk, but it's a straightforward bike ride, so I'm hoping my ex-dislocated elbow will let me travel that way for now. But yes, I do not know when I will actually be moving, aside from "before the end of the month." We'll see!

Gingko, of course, continues to be herself, by which I mean around Valentine's Day, she ate about a cup's worth of therapy putty for my hand. It was nontoxic, luckily, and she got two and a half slices of white bread with every meal to "bulk her diet" until it came out (which — ultimately, it sure did!). One of her favorite things to do to get my attention while I'm trying to relax or focus is to chew on cardboard boxes while making eye contact with me, so the arrival of so many boxes for packing up the apartment has me a little worried for the next little bit. We'll make it work, I guess! I keep trying to use my weekends efficiently or productively or whatever, and then Gingko has other plans, through no fault of her own — she does need those long walks and equally long cuddles, but I cannot afford to put her in doggy day camp for two weeks straight. We'll see!!!

Zhang Linghe's new drama Pursuit of Jade is on Netflix and it's freaking fantastic so far. Slow, patient, character-focused, beautiful to look at, excellent-af women — it's by the same director as Blossom and A Familiar Stranger, which explains a lot. I am excited to see where it goes! It is not the kind of show I can watch while doing other things, though, that is what podcasts are for.

Chaos, chaos, chaos. I keep saying I can't wait to be at the phase of moving where you have to buy out an IKEA. Today, at least, I've been able to sort through and prune a bunch of books. Maybe going one room at a time will keep me from going absolutely batshit? I've never been good at this part, but I'm very grateful that I've got some buffer time so it's not all in a rush. We haven't even talked about the storage unit I need to source and rent indefinitely... oof. Hi! ✶

My fic for flamingwell for last year's [community profile] fandomtrumpshate is finally completely posted! Flamingwell's prompt went far better than I'd anticipated - this fic was supposed to be about 15k! Hahaha. haha. haaa.. XD

Anyway, it's now complete and I'm really proud of it! I'm usually more of a fluff and humour writer, but this thing is angsty! XD

Summary: “Wei Ying!” Lan Wangji gasped, rushing forward.
Wei Ying was lying face down on the ground, an arrow protruding from his shoulder and blood staining the robes on his left side. At first glance it looked like he wasn’t moving at all, only the grey wisps of resentment still swirling around him, but as Lan Wangji knelt down he saw that he had been wrong. Wei Ying was shivering violently, his whole body a shudder. He made no sound besides his harsh breathing.
“Wei Ying,” Lan Wangji said again, gently touching Wei Ying’s back. No response.
“Fuck, what happened here?” Jiang Wanyin said, kneeling down on Wei Ying’s other side. “An ambush?”
--
As the Sunshot Campaign is drawing nearer to Nightless City, Wei Wuxian gets ambushed by an assassin and falls gravely ill. The doctors cannot help him, but Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji refuse to give up.
There must be a way to save Wei Wuxian.

Title: A Meditation Upon the Dawn, by Lan Xichen
Author: Galadhir
Word Count/Drabble Type: 100 words
Character(s)/Ship(s): Lan Xichen/Jin Guangyao (remembered)
Rating/Warnings: None
Summary: Lan Xichen stands at the doorway of his seclusion and muses about the sunrise in Cloud Recesses

~~~~
Where there are no shadows one may attain a kind of snow blindness. Light, in its perfection, robs the eyes of sight, even as the tomb, closing, blots out all hopes, thoughts and dreams.
Early morning. I stand by my half open door and look out at the sunrise. There, at the horizon, night and day are co-mingled in glory. A burst of gold more splendid than any Jin-created tower. A colourless dew-drop coruscates upon the water-weighted pine. I step forward, exaltation kindling in my heart.
And then the clouds return.
In mist too there is a kind of blindness.
